The water crisis in the national Capital has further deepened with residents lamenting that they have been facing hard times as the water they stored in their containers is all finished and if not supplied by Monday night they don’t know how to go about.

The water situation has only gone from bad to worse since the Jats in Haryana started their quota stir a few days ago. For the past two days, Delhi has not received water from the Munak Canal as it has been shutdown.

“life without water is hard,” Surbhi, resident of Subhash Nagar told The Pioneer. She said, “The water which we stored is all finished. Now there is no waterleft. If water supply will not come in the evening, then our condition will be worse.” On Monday, many people did not go to their offices due to no availability of water at their place.

Meanwhile, residents of Old Delhi were forced to fill their water buckets from the treated water supply tanks located in nearby parks. Fahita, who is a resident of Delhi Gate said, “For the basic needs of our family, I am filling water from the park. I know this water is not suitable for drinking purpose as we are not left with any other option.” Some people were seen taking bath with the treated water supply.

The Munak Canal which supplies about 60 per cent of potable water to Delhi has been shut down after it was vandalised by the agitating Jats. Of the total production of 820 Million Gallons per day of potable water, around 600 million gallons of raw water come from Munak Canal.

Earlier on Sunday, the crisis prompted the Arvind Kejriwal Government to order closure of all city schools on Monday and rationing of water.

Water is being only supplied to Rashtrapati Bhavan, offices and residences of the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, Defence installations, hospitals and fire brigade, said Kejriwal, adding that his residence and office will also come under water rationing.

The major areas affected due to the closure of plants are West Delhi, North-West, Central, South and part of North Delhi. It may be noted that there will be water shortage for at least one week.
