Water scarcity to be key poll plank for Delhi BJP

Water scarcity in the national Capital is going to be a major poll plank for the BJP in the upcoming Assembly polls. With the saffron party’s Government in place in Haryana, the Delhi BJP is now trying all means to get Delhi’s share of water from the now controversial Munak Canal. For this, Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay has written to the Chief Minister of Haryana to intervene in the long-standing dispute between the two neighbouring States.

In his letter to Haryana CM Manohar lal Khattar, Upadhyay has demanded that Haryana should release Delhi’s full share of 1100 mgd (million gallons a day) water from all designated points. Upadhyay said, “Yesterday, we had sent a letter to the CM Khattar, urging him to immediately start releasing 80 mgd water through the Munak Canal on a daily basis so that the Dwarka and Okhla plants start functioning. Once resolved, this will help in quenching the thirst of people of west and south Delhi. We are hopeful that the issue would be resolved.” With the release of water from the canal, the city would be relived from crises of potable water and irrigation water. Water and electricity issues may emerge as big promises. The saffron party seeks to gain grounds among the middle class by promising water and electricity, which would play a key role in deciding national Capital’s fate.

With the release of water from Haryana, the city would be relieved of its water crises, said Upadhyay. “The Centre and the State both have BJP Government, the party is hopeful to get the issue resolved with immediate effect,” he added.

Meanwhile, in its parliamentary meeting for the South Delhi constituency, the top leadership of the Delhi BJP suggested that the workers in the area should focus on winning seats like Sangam Vihar, Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar which were taken by Aam Aadmi Party in the December 2013 polls and now have turned into their crucial support base.
