Water bodies in Delhi have become silhouette of “shamshan ghat” and encroached by civic agencies. As per the latest status report of water bodies in North-East district of the Capital, water bodies are now either acting as “garbage dump site” or have been occupied by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) under the lease.
Shockingly, as per the latest report received by Delhi based NGO — Culture Heritage, Environment, Traditions and Promotions of National Awareness (CHETNA) — from Deputy Commissioner’s office, status of water bodies in Karwal Nagar, Sabhapur, Gokulpur have been marked as “heavily encroached” and “on lease”.
Bizarre, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) is clueless on the poor status of 794 water bodies of Delhi. “I put my request in front of DPCC to give detail on water bodies,” said an applicant, adding, “This is extremely sad state of affairs in the Capital where no one is answerable and the violators/exploiters of the law have field day.”
“Status report which I have received from two of deputy commissioner’s office, water bodies in Joharpuri and Mustafabad areas are now cremation ground,” said applicant.
NGO further has claimed that Delhi Parks and Garden Society, another department responsible for status of water bodies, has not bothered to update the data related to condition of water bodies.
According to said status report, there were two bodies in Karwal Nagar and one of them has been encroached by locals while another was allotted to DTC on lease. While water bodies in Joharpuri, Mustafabad and Babarpur have been converted in cremation ground.
Moreover, DPCC has to submit a report on the condition of water bodies in “black and white” in NGT by Tuesday.
