A video went viral on social media, wherein, a mob of around 40-50 people beat up two persons in Aman Vihar area on November 14 this year. The duo was thrashed with sticks in the presence of police personnel who were reportedly not trying to control the mob that took law into their own hands.
The two persons including three others were accused of molesting a woman and beating up by her brother and attempting to kidnap and molest a 17-year-old girl. The three others escaped unscathed from the raging crowd, but were later arrested by Delhi Police, police said Sunday.
"On November 14, information was received about the ruckus created by Vikas and Monu in Chhath Puja Stthal of Hind Vihar Colony. Accordingly police staff had reached at the spot and came to know that Vikas and Monu along with their other friends identified as Sonu, Sandeep and a juvenile had molested a lady and they were caught and beaten up by public," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Seju P Kuruvilla.
On seeing the police, Vikas sensing his arrest in an earlier case registered against him allegedly ran away from the spot with his friend Sandeep. The police team chased him down near railway track where Vikas barged into a pool of dirty water gathered around the area to try and resist arrest, police said.
"The Police team pulled him out from there. Meanwhile a mob of 40-50 angry persons caught Vikas and Sandeep and started beating them for molesting a woman on their festival," DCP added.
Although the video shows police staff not interfering with the angry mob who was thrashing the duo, police stated that they saved the duo and took them to the Police Station.
"Later the same day, a woman filed a complaint alleging that Vikas, Sonu, Sandeep, Monu and a Juvenile of molesting her and beating her brother Shashi. A case under sections 354, 354B, 323, 506, 509 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered and all the five were arrested," the DCP revealed.
"Another case was lodged against them by a 17-year-old girl who accused them of molesting her and attempting to kidnap her when she was on her way to Chhath Puja Stthal at DDA Park in Prem Nagar-III," he said.
However, no case has yet been registered against the mob for thrashing the duo. Earlier on Friday, a man accused of theft passed away after he was beaten by an angry mob in Aman Vihar.
