Vaccination process of 120 deer to take long: Veterinary doctors

Staff Reporter

The process of vaccination of 120 deer in the Delhi zoo will take more than a month, said Delhi zoo official. Veterinary doctors in the Delhi zoo are finding some difficulties to complete the vaccination process after the zoo has been hit hard with the death of 16 spotted deer due to rabies.

On Thursday, Riyaz Khan, Zoo curator said vaccination is being held in the group of six to eight deer. “Every day, we do vaccination of 14 deer and keep them under the supervision of doctors,” said Khan.

Till now, Zoo authorities are not confirming the actual reason of mysterious death of 16 deer. Although, officials have sent the blood samples of reptiles and mammals found in deer enclosure.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has been asking for a detailed report from the National Zoological Park in this regard. The CZA runs its breeding programmes for the Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian rhinoceros, swamp deer, Asiatic lion, brow-antlered deer and red jungle fowl, at the Delhi zoo. However, the wild animal activists have claimed that as per the laws, it is the responsibility of Zoo authority to ensure vaccination so that other animals are not affected.

Reacting on the deaths of the deer, the animal right activists said zoo administration is not able to identify the main reason of 16 deer death.
