In a curious case of the law being flouted by a guardian of the law, and then having to pay for it under the very system that he is a part of, a traffic constable was booked for not properly wearing a helmet. What is interesting about the whole incident is that the constable had to stand in queue and pay a challan of Rs100 to the same traffic inspector that he works under. Not only that, the complaint against the constable was made by none other than the Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander “to himself”.
The incident happened when the Special CP Muktesh Chander saw a constable in his uniform riding pillion on a motorbike while not wearing his helmet properly. Chander shot a video of the constable and later called him to clarify his stand telling him that he has “received a complaint” along with the video proof.
While the said constable made excuses saying that his helmet didn’t have a glass protection, and he had got an insect in his eye due to which he had partially removed his helmet, Chander showed him the video. In the video, it was clearly visible that not only the helmet had the visor protection, the constable was comfortably sitting with the helmet partially on his head for a long time.
After hearing out the constable, Chander ordered him to pay the challan to the concerned traffic inspector, following the same procedure that every common citizen has to follow. “We can only tell people to follow the traffic rules if we follow them ourselves. So just like a common citizen would have to pay the challan by standing in the queue, same would have to be done by anyone in our department who flouts the law,” said Chander, while adding that if anyone brings video proof of any traffic violation by anyone, including traffic personnel, action will be taken as per law.
