A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly carrying a bullet in the United States Embassy situated in the highly secured New Delhi district's Chankyapuri.
According a senior police official, the accused has been identified as Kaverdeep Singh Khera, who is a native of Punjab. “The matter is sensitive as carrying arms without licence inside the Embassy is a crime. Khera was carrying a bullet cartridge when he was intercepted by the security personnel of the Embassy,” the official said.
“The security coordinator was frisking people who had come for visa interview. Khera was also in the queue. Usually, after frisking, visa seekers are then told to pass through a metal detector and are thereafter sent for their interview. However, the security coordinator while frisking the accused found a bullet cartridge in his left pocket,” said the official.
The security personnel immediately took possession of it and took the accused for questioning. “However, on being asked about the possession of the bullet, Khera said it could belong to one of his family members and that he did not know how it came into his trouser pocket. He even pleaded the security personnel to let him go as he was not at fault and did not have any wrong intention,” the official further said.
Khera was then taken to the Chanakyapuri Police Station and an FIR under Section 25, 54 Arms Act was lodged against him.
“The man was reportedly questioned by the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing, the Delhi Police Special Cell and senior police officials of the district to find out his actual intention,” said the official.
“We have arrested the accused and further investigation in the matter is on,” said DCP, New Delhi, Jatin Narwal.
