The accused was arrested on charges with extortion, criminal intimidation and immoral trafficking. Meanwhile the accused was produced before a city court and remanded in one-day police custody.
Police said the accused Nabakula alias Irene was arrested on Thursday night and she came down to Delhi in October last year. “The arrest was made following on the complaint of three victims. The victims told police that the accused along with her crony forced them into prostitution after impounding their passports,” the officer added. The accused had been running an illegal prostitution ring with the patronage of her male companion in Khirki Extension area for the past six months.
The accused Irene was presented before Metropolitan Magistrate Chetna Singh on Friday and remanded in one-day police custody. Police said her custodial interrogation is required to bust the syndicate that is allegedly coercing women into prostitution. Police are also looking for others who are involved. “Irene had called the three victims to India on the pretext of promising them a job in the Capital. When she could not find them jobs once they touched down, the women, who had deposited their passports, began asking Irene to return them. However, Irene had reportedly given the victims some money which she asked them to return.
Since they were unemployed and not in a position to return the money, they refused,” the officer added. Police said Irene said that she would not let them leave the country till they paid her back and told them their only way out was to get into prostitution.
