The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested two people involved in the illegal minting of counterfeit coins of  `10 denomination from Kala Mata Mandir on the outer Ring Road at Rohini Sector 3 Sunday.

Both the accused people have been identified as Sanjay Sharma, an AC and motor binding mechanic, and Sunil Kumar, a machine operator, said police.

Their search led to the recovery of 600 fake coins of the face value of `10. Another 200 coins as well as the machinery and raw materials used for making the currency were recovered from a factory at Peeragarhi on their disclosure.

According to a Delhi Police release, the Crime Branch had received secret inputs about a syndicate of fake coins racketeers operating clandestinely and circulating fake coins in Delhi and national capital region (NCR).

On October 13, a tip-off was received that two people would come near Kali Mata Mandir, outer Ring Road, Sector 3, Rohini, to supply fake coins and a trap was laid for them, police said.

After their arrest and their sustained interrogation revealed that the fake coin syndicate was being run by them with the help of one Naresh Kumar, who was recently arrested and is currently lodged in Tihar jail.

Naresh, who is 42-year-old and originally a resident of Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, had shifted to Rohini and in November 2015 had installed a factory in Bawana to make counterfeit coins with the help of one Sonu, said police, adding that Sonu was instrumental in arranging raw material for minting fake coins and for circulating them.

“Investigation of the case is in progress and efforts are being made to trace the remaining sources and its local receivers, who are involved in circulation of fake coins in Delhi, NCR and other parts of the country,” a senior police

official said.
