The Delhi Traffic Police came to the rescue of 35- year-old of 101 Engineering Regiment by creating 'Special Green Corridor' to transport a live heart from the Palam Airport to RR Hospital at Dhaula Kuan within  six minutes.

The patient was suffering from Dilated Cardio Myopathy and was waiting for a donor in RR Hospital since July 12, 2018. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood effectively.

“On August 13, 2018, a patient was declared brain dead at PGI, Chandigarh. The heart of the donor was brought to Delhi through a special Air Force Dornier Jet Air Craft. In a well planned and coordinated move by Traffic Inspector of Delhi Cantonment area and Palam Airport, a green corridor was provided on a route of 6 KM to take the organ from the technical area Air Force Station, Palam to R. R. Hospital, Delhi Cantonment,” said a senior Traffic police official.

According to the Delhi Traffic Police, normally in a regular course it takes 30 minutes for a commuter to reach Delhi Cantonment from Palam Airport but the traffic police unit through the special green corridor took just 6 minutes to cover the distance.

“A heart needs to be successfully replanted into the recipient within four hours of its retrieval from the donor. In the present case the heart was retrieved at PGI Chandigarh, at 10:00 Hours and was into the operation theatre of R. R. Hospital, Delhi at 11:15 Hours,” added the official.

Earlier in July, the traffic police provided a special corridor to transport a live heart from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
