In a bid to ensure GPS devices in auto-rickshaws, Delhi Government’s Transport department has decided to freeze the issuance of fitness certificate to the auto-rickshaw drivers over their failure to install GPS devices on their vehicles. The transport department has warned warned the auto-rickshaw drivers against fleecing commuters and directed them to install GPS devices on their vehicles.
There was a heated argument between the auto-rickshaw drivers and transport department officials at the Burari auto unit on Wednesday over the same. Rickshaw drivers have threatened to go on a strike if fitness certificate are not issued. For the safety of the commuters travelling in richshaws, the transport department had made the installation of GPS mandatory since last year and despite repeated directives, the rickshaw drivers have not been complying with the same. Now on the directions of Union Home Ministry, the department has stopped the issuance of fitness certificate to the auto-rickshaw drivers.
