Delhi Traffic Police has registered a whopping 20 per cent increase in the collections from prosecutions under various categories of traffic violations in 2013. The cumulative collection from the challans of various categories has increased 20 per cent from 51.58 crore in 2012 to 62 crore in 2013. This has been possible due to over 13 per cent increase in prosecutions. The total challans for different violations in year 2013 are 40.86 lakh as against 35.98 lakh in 2012.

Traffic police said that the increase in prosecutions for various traffic violations was possible due to sustained and stringent action against the violators and keeping a tab on the frequent violators. Special drives, which were conducted during vulnerable hours on regular basis, have played an important role in nabbing the offenders. “The top ten traffic violations include 9.79 lakh challans for jumping traffic signal, 7.10 for improper parking as compared to 5.13 lakh in 2012, 5.70 lakh challans against two-wheelers for not wearing helmets, 3.82 lakh to the motorists not wearing seatbelts, 2.02 lakh for motorists indulging in driving dangerously, 1.51 lakh for violating the one-way roads, 1.19 lakh for defective number plates, 1.02 lakh for tinted glasses, 71,000 for crossing the stop line and 51,000 for vehicle without headlight or tail light,” said additional commissioner of police (traffic) Anil Shukla.

The challans issued this year are inclusive of the prosecutions sent through notices by the traffic police. He added that the prosecutions are also being carried out based on the complaints and pictures posted by the users on social media such as Facebook and Twiter.
