Traffic jam leaves year-enders in a pickle

As Delhiites thronged popular destinations to celebrate New Year on Tuesday, traffic jams were triggered in several places. The national Capital witnessed festive rush at several places, including popular malls such as in Saket, Vasant Kunj and Janakpuri. People returning from their workplaces and heading towards the venues to celebrate the New Year got stuck in jams for long periods.

Commuters experienced traffic bottlenecks in almost every part of the city. The Delhi Traffic Police helpline was flooded with complaint calls.

“We had to issue an advisory to the people not destined towards the District Centre to avoid Press Enclave Road and Mandir Marg to allow normal

traffic discharge,” said a Traffic Police official.

Apart from this, traffic was heavy in and around South Extension due to breakdown of a bus. Traffic is always heavy at South Extension due to the ongoing Delhi Metro construction work as the carriageway space has been narrowed down to facilitate the construction work. Commuters complained that traffic jams were experienced at Dhaula Kuan due to the road repair work.

Traffic movement was also disrupted at Azad Market Chowk due to a pothole. The traffic was, therefore, diverted to Rani Jhansi Road and Boulevard Road.
