Traffic cops vulnerable as truckers rule the roads

SR

Trucks rule city roads at night and often overspeed risking life and limb. A recent incident of abduction of an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Delhi Traffic Police, posted as Zonal Officer (ZO), has proved how these violators give a hoot about policemen. The glaring incident is yet another example of vulnerability of traffic policemen in the call of duty.

On March 2, the 52-year-old ASI, Atajavan signalled a truck on Prahladpur-Mehrauli-Badarpur to stop and after verifying the documents, it was found that the vehicle was plying without valid permit. The trunk was impounded and the ASI asked the truck driver to take the vehicle to Nehru Police traffic office. He also sat in the lorry along with the driver as there was no other way to ferry the impounded vehicle to the traffic pit, where such vehicles are kept. Along the way, driver Sumit stopped the truck and was waylaid by two more men who got in the truck and roughed the police up. They held the victim hostage and thrashed him.

later, all the accused escaped after dumping the ASI on Surajkund Road, Faridabad. “The victim somehow managed to come back and he later informed the police about the incident. After registering the case, police started their investigation and the accused were arrested on Wednesday evening,” a senior police officer said. Recently, a Delhi Police traffic head constable’s thumb was almost chopped off by a local hoodlum on March 6 after the former tried to challan the accused for jumping a red light in Adarsh Nagar area. The police said that arrested persons have been identified as Vinod, Sonu Bhadana and Sumit Bhadana.
