The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday organised a training session in collaboration with WIlGA, an NGO on enforcement of tobacco control workshop on Wednesday to sensitise its inspectors about the urgent need to curb the menace.
Dr SK Arora, Additional Director (Public Health) Delhi Government gave insight into various provisions in the anti-tobacco laws as he lamented that stress is on opening cancer centres and not on curbing usage of cancer causing tobacco products. Echoing similar views, Dr Jagdish Kaur from WIlGA (Women's Initiative for liberation, Growth & Action) stressed on conducting surprise checks and making tobacco cessation facilities widely available to help people quit smoking.
Earlier, NDMC Medical Officer Dr PK Sharma talked about how the tobacco consumption and smoking was harmful to health as well as environment and called for stepping up the anti-tobacco drive in the public places including schools, hospitals and restaurants.
