Temple treasurer kills self after integrity called into question

Staff Reporter

A 42-year-old man — working as a room attendant at the Kali Bari temple in Chittaranjan Park — committed suicide in the guesthouse at the complex on Sunday morning. The dead has been identified as Nirmal Ghorami. The incident took place around 10 in the morning on Sunday.

Ghorami was found hanging from the ceiling fan at guesthouse no. 14. Ghorami was upset as the authorities had questioned him and a few other employees about some missing funds.

He was working at the temple as a housekeeping staff for over a decade and he was also given the responsibility of depositing the cash in accounts, at times. A while ago, some cash went missing and the temple secretary called him along with a few other employees for questioning.

Temple authorities are shocked after the incident and stated that they did not expect him to take such an extreme step. “He was working with us for a very long time and we trusted him. He was given the job of depositing the money at the bank. We don’t know why he did this,” said a member of the temple authority.

Meanwhile Ghorami’s family members revealed that ever since he was questioned he was upset. “He thought his integrity has been questioned and he will be booked by the cops. This might have led him to commit suicide,” said a family member. The body has been sent for post-mortem. He hailed from Kakdwip in West Bengal and is survived by his wife and a 10-year-old son.
