A 16-year-old rape victim gave birth to a child on the terrace of her house in north Delhi’s Burari area and left the baby abandoned near a shop in the area.

According to a senior police official, a police control room (PCR) call was received on October 31 that a newborn baby in north Delhi’s Burari area is wrapped in a cloth from Burari, but no further information was received regarding the baby.

“Police reached the spot and rushed the baby to hospital. When we checked the CCTV footage of the area, the baby was found with a girl. Police traced the girl who told police that she was raped by a 60-year-old shopkeeper months ago. The victim got scared and didn’t tell her mother about the rape,” said the senior police official.

“When the girl gave birth to the child on the terrace, she tried to lower the infant with the help of a rope and polybag. However, the baby started crying and the girl picked up the baby. She covered the baby with a cloth and put the baby near a shop far from her house and left the spot,” he said.

“A case under sections of rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered and the shopkeeper has been arrested. The girl lives with her mother, who works as a domestic help, in Burari area. The accused allegedly raped her eight to nine months ago,” he further added.
