Stupidity, greed catches up with 2 BTech students

Staff Reporter

Greed to earn a quick buck by dubious means cost two engineering students very dear. They tried to sell a stolen iPhone via OlX, a site for selling second hand goods and the person who turned up to buy the handset happened to be the original owner of the phone. He alerted the cops who acted with alacrity and the duo was nabbed. Police later registered a case of theft and sent the two accused students to Tihar. The students, identified as Rajat Kant Singh and Mahesh Kumar, live in South Delhi and belong to good families but the lure of lucre took them to jail where they are now cooling their heels. Interestingly the victim Kushal Bansal, a resident of Patiala, also happens to be an engineer.

Jatin Narwal, the Additional DCP, New Delhi district, said that Rajat Kant Singh and Mahesh Kumar are students of an engineering college of Noida and are pursuing BTech from there. The owner of the phone Kaushal Bansal forgot it in an ATM of a bank in Connaught Place area. “He proceeded to Palika Bazar and later realised that he had forgotten the phone in the ATM. He was dismayed after he found that the phone was missing. He then lodged a missing report with the Connaught Place police station,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Rajat and Mahesh placed an advertisement on the site and the same was noticed by Kushal who thought it best to strike a deal with them since he had lost his phone. Rajat Kant who spoke to Kushal over the phone struck a deal for Rs 38,000 and also told him that he does not have the box of the phone but can produce the bill. Rajat fixed a rendezvous with Kushal and asked him to come to Malviya Nagar Metro station to take the phone and also make the payment, the Additional DCP added.

However, the deal could not be finalised since Rajat was not carrying the bill. “They then decided to meet at Palika Bazar the next day to complete the formalities. Rajat and Mahesh met Kushal with the handset and the purchase bill. Kushal checked the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of the said iPhone and was shocked to find that it was indeed his stolen phone,” he said. He informed the officials of Connaught Police station and the duo was caught red-handed.
