Students suffer as sports, fitness test dates clash

With the Delhi University colleges opening admissions under the category of Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) and Sports, the dates given out for general physical fitness test and Sports trials by some colleges in the North Campus are clashing, which is likely to create a dilemma among students for having to choose one over the other.

The fitness test date at the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Indraprastha College for Women (IP) and Hansraj College is June 22 and the time gap between them is just half an hour. From this year, the university has ruled that a student can clear the fitness test at any one centre and it will be accepted at all colleges, while as the Sports trial will be carried college-wise, with the particular set of sports the college offers.

The criteria of checking the overall fitness of the candidates under the Sports category was started last year. "The relaxation of having to clear the fitness test in any one college is a relief, but the dates that colleges have set are a disappointment. To be on the safer side, not just me, but any student would take as many chances as possible because there is a lot of competition. I applied at SRCC and IP College, but now due to the dates, I can only take the test at one of the two places," Sayesha Berera, who scored 95.5 per cent in CBSE.

The trials for Chess and lawn Tennis at Hansraj and Miranda House are clashing too, on June 22. On June 24 and 25, SRCC has called the students for trial of Badminton at 7:00 am and Hansraj College has called at 8:30 am. Same is the case with Table Tennis trial at SRCC on June 25, as Khalsa College has given the same date to the students as well. A relaxation for the Basketball players would be on June 27, where SRCC has called only girls for the trial and Hansraj College has called Boys for the same.

The Dean of Students Welfare, JM Khurrana mentioned that there is no such rule for students to just appear in one college for fitness test. He said they can take the clearance certificate at one college and it can be shown at all places and also, if they fail at one place they might take another chance.
