Infuriated with news of an 18-year-old student of Class XII mowed down by a city bus of Haryana Roadways, hundreds of students of Dronacharya Government College on Friday afternoon reportedly went on a rampage that lasted more than three hours. The students torched three buses of Haryana Roadways and smashed window panes of three other buses.

The students protested against the district administration at the busy new railway road. The incident occurred around 12.15 pm when Pappu Mandal, a resident of Suratnagar, was on his way to an English coaching class. According to an eyewitness account, Mandal was trying to board the bus on his way home. He slipped and was crushed under the rear wheel of the bus. The driver of the bus tried to escape from the spot.

“But some passengers inside the bus and locals however, forced the driver to halt the vehicle. The driver and the helper later managed to flee leaving the bus parked in the middle of the road,” said Dhananjay, a local. later, the protesting students blocked the road for some hours. Normalcy was restored only when senior police officials intervened and assured students strict action would be taken against the rogue driver. A case of negligence and rash driving causing death has been registered against the accused driver at a city police station.
