Special 2-day House session called to malign civic agencies: Mayors

Even as the Delhi Government has given a call to hold a two-day special session on June 9-10 of the Delhi Assembly to discuss the working of the three municipal corporations vis-à-vis sanitation, the BJP-ruled civic agencies on Monday termed the Government’s announcement a “political move” to pressurise the agencies and malign them.

Also, the agencies alleged that the Government has not yet cleared sanitation by-laws submitted by them. Corporation Mayors said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been keeping himself involved in publicity and expansion of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) outside Delhi by neglecting governance in the city.

North MCD Mayor Sanjeev Nayyar said, “The city Government has gagged the Opposition members in the Assembly and they are generally thrown out from the House. It seems that the Delhi Government is scared of their presence. This is the reason that the Government is convening a special session to politically pressurise the civic agencies. We will not allow the Government to malign them.”

EDMC Mayor Satya Sharma said he had informed the Government about the strike of Safai Karamcharis a few months ago. “Had the Government released the grant on time there would not have been any strike. The Government has not yet implemented the sanitation bye-laws submitted by them. It appears that the Government headed by Kejriwal has no time to decide on important issues,” she said.

SDMC Mayor Shyam Sharma said the agencies despite all obstacles removed maximum garbage in comparison to last year and took all possible efforts in this direction. “The civic agencies gave proof of its competence by desilting thousands tonnes of silt from the nallahs,” he said.

On Sunday, the Government had sent notices to the civic agencies officers mentioning 178 points regarding so called sanitation deficiencies. Moreover, the District Magistrates have issued 178 conditional orders seeking explanation from the civic officials and warned of legal action against them.
