In an attempt to promote the habit of putting garbage in dustbins, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday distributed blue and green dustbins to large number of families in a function organised at Dwarka.

Following the footsteps North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation, (EDMC) it has also announced segregation of waste in six of its colonies.

SDMC Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said distribution of dustbins on World Environment Day signifies its importance in conservation of environment. “The SDMC is concentrating on the need of garbage segregation, putting segregated garbage in two different bins and avoid spillage during transportation of garbage.

“Once people start using both the dustbin to dispose the waste it would be easy to dump only dry garbage in the landfill site whereas earlier entire un-segregated garbage was being dumped there. The segregation will result in lesser quantity of garbage now being dumped at landfill site,” she said.

However, NMC Mayor Preety Agarwal said the garbage will now be collected in the form of biodegradable and recyclable in six colonies such as Shakti Nagar (Civil lines Zone), Pushpanjali (Rohini), New Rajender Nagar (Karol bagh zone, Vivekanand Puri, and Indira Colony (Narela).

“We have already started awareness programme. Our officials and staffs are visiting door to door and motivating people to use separate green and blue bins. The double bins in the blue and green are being provided in the colonies to encourage segregation at source,” she said.

EDMC Mayor Neema Bhagat said the move will help to manage garbage disposal in sustainable manner. “The double bins in the blue and green are being provided in the colonies to encourage segregation at source,” she said.
