In a horrific incident showing intolerance and lack of patience towards fellow human beings in the national Capital, a 32-year-old son of retired Delhi Police official allegedly shot a 50-year-old waiter over “delay in serving a plate” at a wedding ceremony in West Delhi’s Nangloi area. The waiter, who was shot in his head from point blank range, was rushed to Ram Manohar lohia Hospital where later he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said that the incident took place on the intervening night of December 6 and 7 when 32-year-old Dharmendra alias Kale went to attend a wedding ceremony with his group of friends at the Nangloi area. The waiter identified as Yusuf died on Friday last. The shocking incident remained under wraps as the accused happened to be the son a retired Delhi Police official.
According to the police officer, privy to the investigation, “Eyewitnesses claimed that Dharmendra was allegedly in an inebriated condition. He was standing with his group of friends near the main area where the dinner was served. He asked a waiter to get him a plate. However, when the waiter did not return after a few minutes, he started fighting with one of the waiters standing nearby. Yusuf was present there. A scuffle ensued between Dharmendra and Yusuf which blew out of proportion when Dharmendra, in a fit of rage, whipped out a pistol and fired at one 50-year-old Yusuf.”
Police said that Dharmendra is unemployed and is son of a Delhi Police officer, who served as a commando. His father retired recently from the police force and lived with his family in the Ahil Mohalla in Nangloi area.
Dharmendra was arrested in the early morning of December 7 from his house. “At the time of arrest, he was sober. We are probing whether Dharmendra was drunk at the time of the
incident when he shot Yusuf. Further investigation is on in the matter,” said an official.
The investigating official said that the incident led to a chaos at the wedding. Police was informed only when one of the waiters present at the spot informed his seniors, after which they informed the Police Control Room (PCR) unit. A team of local police rushed Yusuf to the Ram Manohar lohia Hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.
Fighting for his life for the past few days, Yusuf breathed his last on Friday, i.e., December 15, confirmed a senior police officer of the West district.
According to Sagar Singh Kalsi, Additional DCP the West district, they had registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) against Dharmendra at the Nangloi police station. However, on Friday, after Yusuf succumbed to the bullet injuries, police converted the Section to 302 (murder). Further investigation is underway.
