Haryana Government and the National Highway Authority of Indian (NHAI) have decided to build three kilometer National Highway to ease traffic volume on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. The three kilometer long road will be built between Ambiance Mall to MG Road.

The new highway — the shortest in the world is aimed at easing the vehicular flow between the national Capital and the millennium city. The estimated cost of the three-kilometer National Highway will be around 200 crores. The entire project will be built by  NHIA.

"The new highway will decongest two major roads that link the  National Highway No 48 and Mehrauli Gurugram (MG) road," Haryana Public Works (Buildings & Roads) minister, Rao Narbir Singh, said.

It would be interesting to mention that the proposal for increasing connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram was mooted in 2005 by officials of the two State Governments. The proposal however, remained in limbo for 12 years, while the floating population of the two cities increased as the years passed by. At present, the Gurugram has one National Highway No 48 which connects Delhi and the traffic volume on the stretch see bumber-to-bumber heavy traffic during the peak hours. lakhs of commuters end up several hours travelling on the stretch during the morning and evening rush hour.

Officials in the district administration said, improving connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram was a top priority and would soon be finalised in coordination with the Delhi Government.

Also, the work on the 18 km stretch of Dwarka Expressway has been resumed. 14 km length of the stretch is in Gurugram while the 4 km stretch is in Delhi. Around 6000 crores estimated cost of the said project.

"Once the stretch will be fully operational it will be connected to IGI airport in Delhi. The commuters of the stretch in Gurugram and Delhi will get better facilities on the National Highway, the Minister, said.

According to the administration officials, the shortest National Highway will surely benefit lakhs of commuters who travelled between Gurugram-Delhi. Right now on an average around 80,000 vehicles pass Delhi-Gurugram Expressway on a daily basis.

"We are planning to reduce the traffic volume on the Expressway to other adjoining routes. like, Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and the Dwarka Expressway is also known as Northern Peripheral Road (NPR)," an official with the district administration said.
