It may seem rainy everyday but Delhi has actually been receiving less rainfall in August - an overall deficit of 44 per cent since June. Rainfall was 67 per cent in excess before this month, but is now merely 29 per cent excess as the scarcity averages things out.
However, more rain is expected over the weekend.
Monsoons made an early entry to the Capital, with June-July witnessing an exceptionally good phase.
But August started with a near week-long dry spell and has received only 79.8 mm till now. The average for this month is 142.4 mm.
"In June, there was 119.5 mm of rainfall, whereas in July, there was 340.5 mm. Rains in both months were more than their month's normal measure," said a senior official from the Meteorological Department.
Nonetheless, Met officials opine that the situation is under control and south-westerly monsoon rains remain 29 per cent more than the season average.
"The season's total up to Friday (from June 1) is 539.8 mm, while normally it should be 418.5 mm. It's true that August is seeing lesser rains, but we have to keep in mind the nature of the rains. Not all days in the prior months got showers. There were infrequent heavy showers then, but this month, the rains are light and occurring more frequently," added another official.
On Friday too, Delhi woke up to a downpour that brought down temperature considerably. The rain gauge measured 35.2 mm in the city.
"lodhi Road got the maximum rain, accounting to 37.6 mm while north Delhi received 26.2 mm. Palam and Ayanagar had 3.9 mm and 8 mm of rain, respectively," said the weatherman. Maximum temperature was three notches below normal, at 30.5 degree Celsius.
The minimum was two points below average, settling at 24.5 degrees. Humidity level oscillated between 97 and 84 per cent.
