The Delhi Gurudwara Sikh Management Committee (DSGMC) has expressed shock and grief at the purported attempt to change the name of Dyal Singh College (evening) of Delhi University to Vande Mataram College.
Rajauri Garden MlA Manjinder Singh Sirsa who is also General Secretary of DSGMC told The Pioneer, "I am appalled to know that management of Dyal Singh College (evening) is organising a function in the name of Vande Mataram College which is totally unacceptable to the Sikh community". How can they do this as the name has not been officially changed, Sirsa added.
Sirsa reminded that Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar in December last year had informed Rajya Sabha that the decision to change the name of Dyal Singh (Evening) College has been put on hold. He also stressed that it was not a Government decision.
The Governing Body (GB) of Dyal Singh College (DSC) had, in a meeting on November 17, decided that Dyal Singh (Evening) College would be called 'Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya' once it is converted to a morning college.
"The Centre government had assured the nation in Parliament that name of the Dyal Singh College will never be changed and a categorical assurance was also given to Union Cabinet Minister Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal by Human Resource Minister Mr. Prakash Javdekar," said General Secretary of DSGMC Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
Sirsa accused Chairman of the College Governing Body and Vice-Chancellor of DU for the alleged name changed. "Whole Sikh community is shocked at the intrigues of Dyal Singh College Chairman Amitabh Sinha and Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi who have jointly connived to change the name of college from Dyal Singh College to VandeMatram Dyal Singh College," said Sirsa.
He said that it was shocking for the country particularly the Sikh community as the Union Human Resources Minister Prakash Javdekar had "given a categorical assurance to the Nation in Parliament that the name will never be changed".
While Amitabh Sinha, the Chairman of the Governing Body of Dyal Singh College when contacted said that the every decision is taken keeping the interest of the student community. "The matter is being look after by the University and the Governing Body has done its bid as per legal and ethical requirement after converting the evening college into full fledged college keeping the interest of students in general," said Sinha.
