In wake of the rising cases of violence against women in the national Capital, the Delhi Government has taken up the cause of imparting self-defence techniques to young girls studying in different Government schools. At present, martial arts training are being given to girls in 60 schools under the Delhi Government. This is likely to be further implemented in all Government schools in the city.
“Martial-arts training is of paramount importance in self-defence as girls today are looking for easy techniques to defend themselves against eve-teasers. The Government would like to offer this sort of training in more and more schools at the earliest in order to cover all Government schools in a phased manner,” said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at a function organised in Thyagraj stadium on Tuesday. She further said that the Government also has plans to sanction nutritional support for the trainee girls so that they could remain healthy and alert during training and thereafter.
Speaking on the occasion where the students displayed their competence in varied martial-arts, Delhi Education Minister Kiran Walia said, “Currently they are being trained in Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Wushu, Jeet Kune-do and Sqay Martial by expert qualified trainers provided by six associations concerned. Each association has
been allotted 10 Government schools. In all, 6,000 girl students have learnt various tricks and tips on the martial arts.”
