In wake of alarming pollution level in the national Capital, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has started a special drive to mitigate the problem by initiating a number of measures such as issuing challans to violators who failed to follow established norms, putting an stoppage on construction work and water sprinkling on the roadsides as part of emergency measures to combat the dust pollution.

During the drive, the civic body has issued 950 challans between September 1 and October 11 under ‘Solid Waste Management’ rule and collected Rs 1, 68,600 as fine. It has also asked ‘Delhi Metro Railway Corporation’ to adhere to the instructions of the NGT in respect of the construction and demolition. The Commissioner of SDMC and East Corporation Dr Puneet Kumar Goel chaired a high-level meeting to chalk out an action plan to overcome the situation arising out of alarming levels of air pollution.

Goel also instructed officials to deploy their all mechanical road sweepers and water tankers for settling down the dust. He also directed officials to hire 20 additional water sprinklers in their respective zones. He added officials of regarding zones have already started action against burning of solid waste, garbage, dry leaves, and plastic, rubber and construction activities.

Director of Press and Information Radha Krishna said that the civic body is committed to mitigate air pollution as Delhi’s air quality has slipped back to poor category due to change in direction of wind which is now flowing from stubble burning areas in Punjab and Haryana. It has been decided to take all possible measures to neutralize air pollution which is detrimental to the health of citizens especially children and aged persons, he said.
