South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Wednesday launched a mass signature campaign in all its four zones to attract direct public participation in garbage segregation.
Inaugurating the campaign in a function organized at Najafgarh Zone, the SDMC Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said that the collection and management of garbage in such a quantity is a challenging task. "Delhi generates 9,000 MT garbage per day and an effective disposal can be done with the help of residents. We want to promote the habit of putting the wet garbage in green dustbin and dry garbage in the blue dustbin," she said.
Mayor also requested all to join hands to make Delhi clean, green, healthy and beautiful city in a systematic manner.
"The campaign will go a long way in disseminating the importance of sanitation and cleanliness and conveying a forceful message to the society," said SDMC Commissioner Dr Puneet Kumar Goel.
"Once people start using both the dustbin to dispose the waste it would be easy to dump only dry garbage in the landfill site whereas earlier entire un-segregated garbage was being dumped there. The segregation will result in lesser quantity of garbage now being dumped at landfill site," he said.
The venues became crowded as citizens, members of RWA and market association joined in large numbers to put signatures to express their dedicated commitment.
