An Associate Editor, working with English daily the Hindustan Times, died after he was hit by a speeding bike in a busy south Delhi market on Monday. The incident took place when the journalist was walking back home after buying fish for his family in south-east Delhi’s Govindpuri market. Police have arrested the accused identified as Dalip.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, South-east district, Romil Baaniya, said the deceased has been identified as Raj Kumar Ray, 46, who worked as associate editor with the Hindustan Times.

Ray, the sole breadwinner of his family, is survived by his mother, whom he had just dropped to the New Delhi Railway Station, his wife and his six-year-old son.

Police said Ray was on his way to home to Faridabad from the station when he decided to stop and buy fish, a staple in every Bengali home.

It was 5.17 pm when a speeding bike hit him with massive force, leading to severe head injuries. He was rushed to AIIMS where he was declared brought dead due to excessive bleeding.

Ray, whose father passed away in 2015, had earlier worked with PTI as finance correspondent before moving to Reuters news agency, Bloomberg Television and Financial Express. He was known to his friends and colleagues as an upright and softspoken journalist. The cremation will take place on Tuesday after the autopsy report is completed.

“A case has been registered under section 279 (Rash driving) and 304A (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code at the Govindpuri police station and the accused identified as Dalip was arrested and his vehicle was seized,” said DCP Romil Baaniya.
