Renaming Dyal College: Gujral gave misleading remark in RS, says Sinha

Staff Reporter

Amitabh Sinha, the chairman of the governing body of Dyal Singh College, has reacted sharply to SAD MP Naresh Gujral’s statement in the Rajya Sabha. Sinha said Gujral made allegation on the floor of the House that the Dyal Singh College governing body committee was a divisive committee which was trying to create communal hatred in this country.

Sinha said it was not his mindset but that of such people, who are trying to distort facts with misleading and false arguments, which ought to be addressed.

Reacting to the statement of Gujral, who raised the issue of renaming of Dyal Singh (evening) College during the Zero Hour on Tuesday, Sinha on Wednesday said, “Gujral had given a false and misleading statement in the House.”

“Dyal Singh evening College is not a ‘minority college’ as mentioned by the SAD leader in the Rajya Sabha. Dyal Singh College is a secular college as per its preamble, framed by late Dyal Singh and it is completely owned and managed by Delhi University now. His statement amounts to misleading the house,” said Sinha.

He said all evening colleges that have been brought to the morning session must bear new names as per the mandate of the DU. “There is neither legal nor technical issue with the name Vandemataram Mahavidyalaya. It is neither legally nor ethically wrong to name a separate institution as Vandemataram Mayavidyalaya,” said Sinha.

He cited the example of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, which was earlier Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College (Evening). Sinha said that HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has convened a meeting of both the sides on the subject, which he will attend. The time and date of the meeting will be informed to him as he has been told.
