Ragging in DU: Vijender draws top cop's attention

Staff Reporter

In the wake of the recent incidents of alleged ragging at the Delhi University, former president of Delhi BJP Vijender Gupta wrote a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi expressing his concern over the incidents. Gupta has also written a letter to the Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh and has appealed to both the police and university authorities to take necessary steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

Gupta has mentioned in the letter that it is an extremely serious issue as it can cause permanent damage to the physical and mental well being of the students, especially, those away from home. “It can instill fear, thus, hampering

their personal growth,” he said.

“It is utterly shameful that even after repeated pleas made by the students’ and parents’ communities to put a stop to the ragging nuisance in colleges, such incidents continue to take place. In both the cases of ragging reported at Satyawati College and Shyam lal College of DU that left two freshers with injuries, the college authorities tried to scuttle the issue and discouraged the victims to file a complaint. This kind of irresponsible behaviour from the highest authority of an academic institution is highly regrettable,” the letter sent by the BJP leader said.

He said that the recent incidents show that police failed to ensure that their instructions are taken seriously and implemented by the college administration. Gupta also demanded that a helpline be set up for students who want to report cases of ragging against them. “Also police vigilance must be enhanced in and around colleges and police officials stationed near the campus area must be appropriately sensitised to deal with the problems faced by the fresher community, specifically, out-station students,” said Gupta.
