Three police personnel, including a sub-inspector, posted with the special investigation team (SIT) of Crime Branch have been sent to District lines; one of the police personnel has been booked for trying to extort money from an eatery shop owner in Rohini Sector 18. A case under Section 384 (extortion) has been registered at the anti-extortion unit of Crime Branch after the complainant recorded his telephone conversations with the accused Delhi Police personnel and submitted the tapes before SBK Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch).
Investigation has been taken up and the role of one more sub-inspector posted in the security unit is under scanner. Interestingly, sub-inspector Sunil Kumar, one of the police personnel, who was sent to District lines, has received a transfer order from the Anti-Corruption Branch of Delhi Government — the day the order to his suspension was issued.
Sources said that complainant Hardeep Singh stays in Alipur area with his family and runs his eatery where all police personnel of SIT come for dinner. On December 11, Singh had sold his ancestral land in Punjab and reportedly received Rs 50 lakh. He had discussed the sale of his property with some police personnel. “Singh told police he had organised a celebration at home. The SIT conducted a raid. Although no drugs were found in the house, police allegedly took Rs 4.19 lakh in cash and gold from the victim’s daughter-in-law without an official entry. They also detained his son, Gurpreet Singh,” police sources added.
After his son’s wrongful detention, police personnel of the raiding party purportedly told him that they had recovered heroin from his residence. They threatened to arrest him under NDPS Act if he failed to cough up Rs 20 lakh.
The victim alleged that the accused police personnel, SI Kumar, assistant sub-inspector — Harcharan and Constable Kawarpal Singh were constantly calling his father demanding hush money. “Singh then decided to record his phone conversation with one of the accused ASI Harcharan and on January 20, he approached the Jt CP (Crime) SBK Singh. The police personnel were immediately suspended. After a probe, a fresh case was registered this week against ASI Harcharan,” police sources said.
