Principal alleges harassment by BJP leader

ABHINAV SINGH

Inderjeet Singh Bakshi, the Principal of  Dyal Singh College of Delhi University (DU), who was asked by the college Governing Body (GB) to proceed on leave pending a graft enquiry against him, has alleged undue harassment. He said he was deliberately targeted by the GB Chairman and BJP leader Amitabh Sinha by fabricating false charges “overnight” because he always stood against his wishes of “renaming” and “bifurcating” the college.

“Eventually he failed in his intention of renaming the college after the Union Human Resource Development Minister intervened. After this I became the target of GB Chairman as my stand on the issue was against his wishes,” said Bakshi.

It may be noted that Sinha had previously lobbied for renaming the college as “Vande Mataram College” but the proposition landed into controversy and was met with after strong protest from several quarters.

However, the recent controversy is around the issue of college students union election held this month. The principal nullified the election of college student's union president as he felt that there was “violation of  code of conduct for elections”. When the aggrieved students approached the chairman against the principal's decision the chairman allegedly suspended the decision and advised the principal to place the matter in GB meeting, said a college functionary. Bakshi however didn't attend the GB meeting.

The GB passed a resolution to order a enquiry on alleged graft charges against the principal and asked him to “proceed on leave and avoid coming to college campus during pendency of the enquiry”. However, defying the diktat, Bakshi not only came to the college for the second consecutive day on Wednesday but also took classes.

The principal said that he will never comply with the order as the intent of GB Chairman is “mala-fide” and “vindictive”. He said that he will continue coming to the college and work as usual.

He said that apart from it there are host of other issues that led to his victimization as he had always stood against those decisions of Chairman that are not good for college. Bakshi said that Sinha was allegedly involved in giving contract of house-keeping and security overlooking the lowest quotation or bid in order to favor someone. “Sinha has also illegally occupied the conference room of the college and is using it as his room,” said the principal.

The Dyal Singh College Teachers' Association came out in support of  the principal demanding immediate dismissal of Chairman Amitabh Sinha.

College Chairman Amitabh Sinha does not respond to the repeated calls and messages while P.K Sharma principal of Dyal Singh evening college who have been assigned by GB to look after the Dyal Singh College as well during the pendency of enquiry, has planned to approach GB and university against Bakshi.
