Amending the Delhi Police (Appointment and Recruitment) Rules 1980, lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung has moved a notification to the Delhi Police making 33 per cent reservation for women in direct recruitment in Non-Gazetted posts in Delhi Police force.
Following the MHA order, Jung last month directed the Delhi Police to implement it. As per the MHA’s order, “Thirty-three per cent reservation for women in direct recruitment in Non-Gazetted posts from constables to sub-inspectors in police forces of all the union territories including the Delhi Police.”
The notification stated, “Reservation of vacancies and other requirement made for SC, ST, and ex-servicemen etc.” Out of 10 per cent quota is meant for ex-servicemen; 50 per cent of it will be reserved for officers who served in special forces, officers who received a ‘Qualified Instructors’ grading in the commando course and officers from the navy/air force who have worked in commando type units, added the notification.
Jung’s notice to the Delhi Police has also asked to reserve vacancies for sons and daughters of serving or retired or deceased police personnel but not more than five per cent in the recruitment year.
The lG’s notification evidently directed the Delhi Police to maintain and not affect the reservations and other concessions required to be provided for SC/ST, women and other special categories of persons in accordance with the order issued by the Government from time to time. “The defined reservations are meant for every Non-Gazetted post also including assistant wireless operator (tele-printer operator), mast lasker (head constable), telephone exchange operator (head constable), and workshop hand (constable), store clerk (head constable), draftsman (sub-inspector) and ASI (Finger Print Bureau).
Welcoming the move, a senior police officer said, “Such reservation braces the working module of police force and empowers women more literally.”
