The Delhi Police busted a major human trafficking racket and rescued 23 women brought to the Capital from Nepal and Bengal. In what  seems to be an international flesh trade racket, traffickers brought these women on the pretext of employment in Dubai. Police have identified two persons — Ramu Chaudhury and Shobhin — involved in the trafficking. The accused persons are absconding, police said.

According to a police officer, 21 women were brought from Nepal while two other were trafficked from Bengal.

Rescued women, all in their twenties, were kept in a house in South Delhi’s Mahipalpur village for close to a month. The police got the tip-off on Friday after one of the victims managed to flee from the house and complained to the Nepal Embassy about their plight. They were promised jobs in Delhi but were wrongfully confined in a house in the Capital. They later got to know that they would be taken to Dubai and the people behind this were planning to sell them there.

“On Friday, one of the victims, a 23-year-old girl, mustered up the courage and complained to the Nepal Embassy that two persons Ramu Chaudhury and Shobhin had brought them to Delhi only to be taken to Dubai to get sold there and probably forced into prostitution. The embassy immediately complained to Delhi Police Crime Branch which raided the house and rescued all of them,” said a crime branch official.

The police official further said that the women were allegedly abused and threatened by the accused to not disclose to anyone where they would be taken and what they were here for.

“ The victims will now be taken to a Nari Niketan in West Delhi and will be counseled. Their individual statements have not been taken yet. Once they are properly counseled and their exact whereabouts are known, they will be rehabilitated back to their native places,” said NP Adhikari, a social activist working for NGO Nepal Ekta Samaj in Delhi, who also helped Delhi police in rescuing the women.

The police official said, we have received the complaint on Friday and registered an FIR under Sections 370(Trafficking of person), 344(Wrongful confinement for ten or more days), 506(Punishment for criminal intimidation), 509(Act intended to insult the modesty of women) and 120B( criminal conspiracy).

“We are in search of the accused and further investigations in the matter is on,” said the official.
