The Delhi Police PCR (police control room) vans will soon be equipped with phablets, a kind of smartphone and tablet, through which the staff posted in vehicles, would trace the exact location of the incident spot while attending the calls.

Police claim phablets will help in maintaining the emergency management system.

Phablet is a smartphone having a screen which is intermediate in size between that of a typical smartphone and a tablet computer. As of now, only a few companies, including Samsung, are manufacturing this devise which costs under Rs10,000.

“This device will be installed in every PCR vans in the next three to four weeks. It will work as a mini computer for a PCR staff member while on attending a call,” Special Commissioner of Police (Operations) Sundari Nanda told The Pioneer.

When a call comes on the PCR system installed at Police Headquarters, the person sitting here feed the information on the computer screen and locate the position of the caller through the internet mapping, said officials.

Through GPS, he locates the nearest PCR van and informs its staff on wireless about the incident and its location, said officials, adding that by the use of a phablet, a screen image of the spot location will also be sent to the PCR staff member and this will help them in locating the spot and caller, easily.

Also, Nanda said the PCR staff member may make call through this device, if he is not finding the spot easily. “As of now, they use their own cell phones for tracking the position of the caller,” she added.

The Delhi Police has recently signed an MOU with the ONGC (Oil And Natural Gas Corporation) under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which is a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders.

The Delhi Police has 850 PCR vans and almost every vehicle remain on road for 24x7. The estimated cost of the whole project is around Rs76 lakhs which is being sanctioned by the ONGC through CSR, said another officer.

As of now, all the PCR are equipped with MDTs (Mobile Data Terminal service) through which the call receiver locates the GPS installed in a PCR van and communicate with the official posted in them.
