Analysis of crime against women has revealed that places with improper lighting are the vulnerable spots. Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has written to the civic agencies to lower the height of street lights so that streets are properly lit up and those hiding behind the dim lights are brought to justice.
Women and girls fear walking or going out of their home after dark if the area near their house is not lit up properly. The reason behind this is that they don’t like being a prey to the molesters, stalkers and even the chain snatchers. With strong force to take offenders to task the Delhi Police chief revealed that there are few areas in the Capital which have lush green cover and despite having street lights the area is not well lit up as the light is covered by the trees. “We have written and requested the civic agencies to lower the height of street lights in such areas so that they could be utilized properly and avoid any untoward incident,” said Bassi. There are places where the street lights are not working and the civic agencies need to fix this. Police Patrolling is being done but these minor loopholes need to be fixed he further added.
The Delhi Police have also brought 255 vulnerable routes under the scanner. Apart from the vulnerable routes there are stretches as well which are dark such as Chirag Delhi stretch, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Marg in Hauz Khas, Gole Market, Todarmal lane, Vakil lane, Ridge Road T-point, Sardar Patel Marg, INA Market, Dwarka, Karol Bagh and Delhi Gate. The Delhi Police will make sure that in the coming year they identify all the dark stretches in the Capital and go an extra mile to make those areas safe for women.
Significantly, Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal had also in a speech delivered on Thursday said that women in the Capital dread walking on a dark stretch because the bulb of the street lights is not functioning. “The MlA’s do not worry about these minor problems but only think about big budget projects. Fixing the small problems of the aam aadmi would also prevent crime against women,” Kejriwal said.
