A country-made pistol and a threat letter against Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ University President Kanhaiya Kumar, purportedly written by a man who had earlier threatened the student leader over Facebook, were recovered from a bus operating between an ISBT and JNU campus following which the Delhi Police is mulling enhancing his security.
The weapon was recovered in a bus operating between Kashmere Gate ISBT and the JNU campus, after the driver spotted an unclaimed bag and raised an alarm.
The letter and the weapon allegedly were put inside the bus by the Uttar Pradesh’s unit Navnirman Sena’s national president, Amit Jani, who had earlier also posted a threat on Facebook.
On March 28, Jani through his Facebook post had threatened to storm the JNU campus and gun down Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid.
As soon as the bus conductor of the bus informed police about the abandoned bag, a team of police officials reached the spot and recovered a letter and a pistol following which a team of around 12 police officers was sent to Jani’s Delhi office, ‘Jani Corporate Advertisers Private limited,’ located in lajpat Nagar area. However, Jani was not present in his office.
Talking to The Pioneer, Jani said, “I don’t understand why the Delhi Police is trying to put these anti-national in safety. Only weapons will be sent for these criminals.” He further added, “Those who support culprits like Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid are anti-nationals. How many pistols will you seize…Every home has pistols to shoot these anti-nationals.”
Kumar doesn’t get security cover inside the campus but the university authorities have clearly been instructed to inform Vasant Kunj (North) police station everytime he leaves the campus and security is provided accordingly. After the alert, police are likely to increase his security cover and also enhance vigil around the JNU area, the official added.
Agitated over the alleged inaction by JNU administration over the issue, JNU students’ union demanded that the matter of security be raised by the Vice-Chancellor with police.
“I have repeatedly alerted the JNU administration to these threats. But there’s no positive response. We are disappointed by the silence of the administration and V-C on this issue. Is the V-C under pressure from the Modi Government to not act against those issuing threatsIJ Or, is the JNU administration being deliberately complacentIJ” JNUSU vice president Shehla Rashid Shora said.
