In a bid to offer better arrangements to picnickers and visitors, Delhi Traffic Police has planned to increase parking space at C-Hexagon. Parking for the India Gate central vista will now be available till Rafi Marg. Once implemented, 4,000 vehicles can be accommodated at the area. At present, the empty space behind the water channels at North Block and South Block are used for parking, which can accommodate just 900 vehicles at a time.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla said that to extend facilities to the masses, apart from parking other modifications will be made at the India Gate area. The road connecting Janpath to Vijay Chowk will be converted into a vehicle-free zone. He said buses will also not ply on the road and the road will unavailable for parking vehicles. “With these measures, pedestrians will not have any difficulty to walk on this stretch. Vehicles will not be allowed to enter Rafi Marg from 7 pm to 10 pm on weekdays and 4.30 pm to 10 pm on weekends,” added Shukla.
For ease of pedestrians, eight to 10 Traffic Police personnel on bikes will patrol the area from 6 pm till midnight. No vehicle will be allowed to park at C-Hexagon post 6 pm. Hawkers will be chase out of the circles in the evening and autorickshaws will allotted specific drop points. Traffic Police have also made some route changes and commuters heading to North Delhi from southern parts of the city will have to take Sunehri Masjid, Maulana Azad Road and Rajendra Prasad Marg.
“Once the plan is implemented, approximately 4,000 vehicles can be parked at one go. To take the plan forward, we have spoken to Central Public Works Department (CPWD), the agency in-charge of the area,” he said.
