Para-athlete critical after brutal attack

Staff Reporter

A 42-year-old para-athlete Anil Sharma was brutally beaten by a group of unidentified men in Central Delhi’s Paharganj area on July 21.

It’s been six days yet the local police are clueless about the accused as they have no information on what exactly happened on the night of the incident.

Family members of the victim, who is struggling for his life in the ICU of Bl Kapoor Memorial Hospital in Karol Bagh, said Anil represented India at Spain. He pursued in the powerlifting category. For past few months Anil was running a snack shop outside Hanuman Mandir at Connaught Place.

Talking to The Pioneer, lalita, sister of Anil said, “Doctors told us that they had never done such a major surgery as the one which they did on my brother. Even after the surgery doctors said it will take time for Anil to recuperate.”

Admitted in the hospital for the past six days, Anil had been operated upon and had lost his kidney, pancreas and a portion of the intestines in what police suspect to be a matter of personal rivalry.

“My brother had gone out for dinner with his two friends — Mohit and Mohan Chand. While they were returning from the hotel in Paharganj, in a statement to police, his friends told Anil got a call from someone and due to which he got out of his car. Talking on the phone, Anil was walking out when he met a friend of his.

An argument took place between Anil and that friend. Within a few minutes, that friend gathered with more men and started beating my brother black and blue. When the two friends of Anil tried to save him, one of them fled while the other person was too beaten up.

The incident happened around 12 am on July 21. Anil’s wife, Pooja kept calling him but the calls went unanswered. It was only later at night, around 2 am that wife of Anil’s friend called Pooja to inform that Anil and Mohit have been beaten up and are admitted in lady Hardinge Hospital.

It was only later that Anil was shifted to the Ram Manohar lohia Hospital and then to Bl Kapoor Hospital, where he is been operated upon.

Confirming about the incident, Mandeep Singh Randhawa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) said, “We have registered a case under IPC Section 323, 34 and 308 which was later converted to Section 307 (attempt to murder) at the Paharganj police station. Investigation is on.”

Meanwhile, kin of the athlete deny about any personal enmity of Anil Sharma with anyone else.
