Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) is going to dispose the 17 cranes currently in use to tow vehicles seized for traffic violations since these cranes operate on diesel and are more than a decade old.
Traffic Police has over 90 cranes and all of them run on diesel. Following the NGT order of scrapping the diesel-run vehicles, which are said to be the cause of pollution, Traffic Police has decided to take these vehicles off road. Traffic Police officials said they are checking records of other vehicles that fall under the banned category.
“The cranes are being removed since they do not conform to the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and we will scrap other diesel-run vehicles too that are over 10 years old,” said an officer. Several diesel-run SUVs and cars, more than 10 years old, are still being used by the traffic unit. An official said these vehicles too will be junked in due course. Interestingly, with this, Delhi Traffic Police will possibly face a shortage of vehicles in the department.
In the other units of Delhi Police as well, many cars, including police control room (PCR) vans, have also outlived the NGT directive. Sources said more than 90 per cent of vehicles in Delhi Police, including official vehicles and escort cars, run on diesel.
A senior officer said that the following the NGT order, Traffic Police has issued a circular for checking the vehicles in all units of Delhi Police, which are more than 10 years old and run on diesel.
