Now, breathe easy as strong winds blow away pollutants

With favourable weather condition, air quality in Capital has started improving. On Tuesday, the average mass concentration of both the Particulate Matter (PM) 10 and 2.5 was measured only two times more than their safer limits on National Ambient Air Quality Index (NAAQI).

According to environmentalists in Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), wind speed is recorded relatively high which is the main factor to bring down the concentration of suspended Particulate Matters (SPM)s in City’s air.

At Mandir Marg, the value of PM 2.5, was recorded at 70 µg/m3 while PM 10 was at 141 µg/m3. At RK Puram, the values of both the pollutants were measured at 135 and 298µg/m3 while the prescribed standards of both PMs by the Indian Meteorological Department  are 60 and 100 µg/m3.

Notably, in Asia pacific region, air quality at Indira Gandhi Airport (IGI) was recorded cleaner as compared to Beijing airport of China.

As per the statistics of flightstats.com, IGI has recorded “nil” delay in flight operations due to clear and favorable weather conditions. The delay index was updated its status for IGI as “very low delays”.

A senior scientist at MoES said the visibility was recorded up to 2 miles while velocity of wind was 14 KM per hour.

In the advisory report of SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research), the average pollutant values were recorded at 122 and 228 µg/m3 while, both the values recorded above 500 µg/m3 earlier.
