Nobody to nurse patients as nurses go on strike

Staff Reporter

Patients in hospitals such as Bara Hindu Rao, Kasturba Gandhi, Rajan Babu had to suffer a lot after 1,500 nurses working at municipal-run hospitals went on an indefinite strike on Monday due to delayed salaries and no promotions over the years.

Nurses claimed that nothing has been done to resolve their issues despite repeated assurances by the MCD officials.

According to the striking nurses, those who have been working for the past 30 years were not given promotions. Also, they said all the MCD hospitals are witnessing acute nursing staff storage.

“There is huge shortage of nursing superintendents, nursing sisters and staff in the hospitals. Municipal agencies are neither providing job opportunity to the new comers nor they are giving promotions to us,” said Sushma Kumar, president of Delhi Nursing Union.

Only a few contractual nurses are aiding the hospitals and all other senior nurses are on indefinite strike. “We want our demands to be fulfilled. Else strike will be continued in the coming days as well and will go on till MCD fulfils our demands. Even, we do not get our salaries on time,” said a nurse.
