Gurugram Police’s plans to address the problems faced by the people of North-Eastern States has hit the wall as none of the officials from North-East have shown inclination to come on deputation. A month ago, the Gurugram police had written a letter to Director General of Police (DGP) Haryana, to deploy officials from the North-Eastern States in Gurugram.

“We had sent the proposal to State Goverment as we felt that a police officer from North-Eastern States will be of great advantage as there are hundreds of people from these States in the city. But there has been no response from the North-Eastern States. We feel that officials are not willing to come on deputation with the police here, Baljeet Singh Sandhu, Director General of Police (DGP) Haryana, said.

Haryana Police is planning to introduce two to four officials from the North-East to deploy in the 'Mitra Kaksh' (friendly room) at the Commissioner of Gurugram Police office. It will be run by the officials and non-police staff from Norther-Eastrn States, the DGP added.

Earlier, the department had asked for around 16 personnel on deputation from North-East. Gurugram Policel had planned to appoint these officials as the nodal officers to tackle the problems being faced by persons from the North-East presently living in Gurugram.

The language gap often hampers the investigation. Also, a large number of crimes against North-East residents go unreported because victims have little confidence in the local police.

Apart from this, the city police was also planning to seek induction of officers who are experts in Japanese, Korean and Arabic languages, considering that a large number of foreign nationals are part of the Gurugram population.

It may be noted that in a recent attack, a 26-year-old woman from Sikkim was allegedly gangraped by three unidentified men in a moving car on May 13. There are more than 3,000 North-Easterners working in call centres and retail and hospitality sectors, said a senior police official adding their security is a cause of concern.
