No more groping in the dark

Days after the Delhi’s power regulator got flak for delay in fixing accountability for the May 30 storm that exposed the absence of preparedness of the transmission officials and discoms leading to major power blackouts in the city, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on Tuesday announced that it would proceed with the case next week.

“In order to ensure that the concerned defaulting stakeholders are made accountable for the series of long power outages, we will hold a hearing in the case next week,” said JP Singh, member, DERC. While explaining how the case will be taken forward, he further said, “We will find out why and how come it (the power outages) happened. And if need be, we will also ask the stakeholders to provide us with evidence to substantiate their claims.” “It is not that we were delaying. The Delhi Transco limited had asked for time in submitting detailed reply which took time. If required, we will penalise the defaulting stakeholders,” he added.

Highlighting the delay, the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday called for more accountability of the power regulator towards common public which would ensure that it acts faster against the discoms if they turn defaulter. The party had demanded that the law which guides the functioning of the DERC should be amended to make the panel accountable to the people.
