The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) has planned to convert over a dozen prime properties into commercial complexes for maximum utilisation of its resources. These include properties in areas like Karol Bagh, Karmpura, Model Town, Azadpur, Kashmere Gate, Minto Road and Kingsway Camp, among others. Most of these properties are single or double-storey residential units that will be demolished and multi-storey units will be constructed afresh.
While the basement and ground floors will be put to commercial usage, the remaining floors will be used for residential purposes. The proposal was made by Standing Committee Chairman Mohan Bhardwaj in the revised budget estimate in the House meeting of North Delhi Corporation on Thursday.
Bhardwaj said the commercial exploitation of properties will generate huge revenue for the civic body. The civic body has proposed constructing a commercial complex over an area of 1.21 lakh square metre which is more than double the total area of the civic centre. The structure would come up in Azadpur, which also has Asia’s biggest fruit and vegetable market. The commercial complex is expected to earn a revenue of Rs500 crore annually.
The commercial complex will come up over an area of 1.21 lakh square metres in Azadpur where over 500 staff quarters are built at present.
