The much-awaited flyover at the busy crossing on the National Highway (NH)-8 at the Hero Honda Chowk has been opened to traffic after civic agencies and Gurugram Traffic Police conducted a trial a trial on Friday evening.

The stretch — for motorists coming from Jaipur to Delhi — is expected to reduce traffic load at the existing crossing. The authorities at National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said the stretch will become formally functional from Monday.

The Gurugram-Jaipur side of the flyover was already opened for traffic in March  this year. Anticipating huge traffic jams on NH-8, the authorities were forced to open carriageways on the flyover.

The eight-lane flyover from Delhi to Jaipur has been opened for both the lanes. Two lanes have been reserved for the traffic coming from Jaipur heading towards Delhi and similarly for the traffic coming from Delhi to Jaipur. The Hero Honda Chowk, on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, is one of the most congested portions of the expressway and had hit the headlines last monsoon when traffic was stuck for several hours on the Expressway.

“The progress work on the stretch was going on in full swing. The administration also asked the ongoing work should be completed before the monsoon and we had full faith that the flyover becomes operational on time,” said Ashok Sharma, the Project Director, NHAI.

The flyover will benefit the residents of the areas around the flyover and nearest sectors. More than 50,000 vehicles are expected to use the flyover daily.

“The district witnessed 325 mm rain in the last 11 days and the civic authority is fully prepared to handle the situation,” an official within the administration said.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal Khattar had on Thursday directed the administration that the project work on the stretch should not miss the deadline also the widening work of the Badshahpur drain, should be completed on time.
