The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been selected one of the first townships to be nominated as Solar City under the Solar City Project of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India.
The NDMC has prepared a Detail Project Report (DPR) for generation of rooftop photovoltaic electricity on all its major buildings i.e., schools, hospitals, markets and office, according to New Delhi Municipal Council chairperson, Jajaj Shrivastava.
Shrivastava said that NDMC has become the first municipal body in the country to sign an MoU with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for executing the projects. As per the MoU, both parties will also explore opportunities for developing and deploying ground-mounted solar PV plants.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India is already undertaking PV-based ground mounted (off grid/grid connected) solar power projects and New Delhi Municipal Council may have unutilised land which may be used for installation of solar PV projects. Both parties also recognise the importance of available solar resource for industrial and thermal applications.
The NDMC is expecting to generate almost 8 MWs rooftop solar energy within a year, Shrivastava informed. The MoU signed on Sunday was between the New Delhi Municipal Council and Solar Energy Corporation of India.
