Modi trashes opinion polls as baazaru

Peeved at the pre-poll opinion surveys predicting an upper edge for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi Assembly polls to be held on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi trashed the reports terming them unauthentic and urged voters “not to believe such lies”. Addressing his last rally before the closely contested elections, Modi said the opinion polls were a part of the ‘conspiracy to befool people’ and even went up to term them baazaru (business minded).

Appealing to the people to vote for stability and development in Delhi, Modi said, “These surveys had predicted their (AAP’s) victory with over 50 seats ahead of the 2013 elections. But after the poll results, the BJP emerged as the largest party. Similarly, they had declared Kejriwal the winner from Varanasi in the lok Sabha polls. It is a conspiracy to mislead the voters of Delhi.”

Addressing his final rally at South Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar, Modi questioned the credibility of opinion poll surveys saying they projected such leaders as PM or CM who were not capable of winning an election. The Prime Minister continued with his offensive against the AAP for allegedly receiving black money from dubious companies.

He said he was surprised to see his name in the list of donors to the AAP, which also had the names of Mahatma Gandhi and Barack Obama. “I was asked by my friends if I had has also given donation to the AAP and when I got it checked, I was surprised to know that even Mahatma Gandhi and (US President Barack) Obama have donated to them. What kind of people are they (AAP)IJ In public life there should not be any place for such lies,” Modi said.

He also criticised the opposition parties for politicising the issues like setting up of SIT on 1984 riots and reduction of petroleum prices. Modi said these issues were unfortunately being linked with political gains by the Congress and the AAP. “The SIT on 1984 riots was recommended by the Judicial Commission. It is not a political decision. Similarly, the petroleum prices have not been slashed in wake of elections. These are people-oriented measures and will continue even after the elections,” Modi said.
